Demonstrations and Sparring
« on: July 29, 2010, 12:02:27 pm »

Has anyone ever tested the skill gains of demonstrations vs sparring, and how, if possible, to have dwarves choose one over the other?

Valuing life seems too close to an aesthetic rule for me, I think.
Only in Dwarf Fortress is the value of life placed as "aesthetic."

Sparring trains everything at once, while demonstrations only train a single skill. I dunno if one is more effective though.

From what I have seen your military tries to get everyone on the same level skill wise...so when everyone is a noob they all spar and then when someone gets ahead they tend to demonstrate to the others the skill they got ahead in and it catches em up...so while it may be slower (dont know if it is) it will happen almost 100% guaranteed unless everyone is in a single person squad by themselves...but its good when dealing with lots of skills...sparring has the same results as an actual fight and therefore there is no real uniform skill gain AFAIK

Demonstrations are kind of slow, because the demonstrator uses the "teacher" skill and the audience uses the "student" skill to calculate EXP gains, and I doubt anyone has even Novice in that.  If you could get those teacher and learner skills up, however, demonstrations would be frighteningly fast.

This fortress is turning into some kind of supervillain lair or something.
You do remember that you've been farming gigantic wingless dragon-fish for profit and Fun, right?
