Is it normal for my book keeper to...?
« on: July 31, 2010, 02:19:04 am »

Is it normal for my book keeper to be in his office, doing his record-y stuff WHILE holding an entire barrel of booze? It wouldn't normally be a problem if it weren't for the fact my fort has NO talented brewers and we're short on anything brewable. So him hogging the entire barrel seems rather selfish. Is there something I should be doing about this, or is it a bug? Or is this dorf in particular very, very greedy?

I can definitely see that. 'Ok, that's the deathtrap components done. Next... 1 artifact silk battle axe, menacing with spikes of cheese. I need a drink. I need a BIG drink.'

He's just participating in the latest Dwarven drinking game. It involves drinking everytime you count a microcline boulder.

You've got dwarves melting metal, crafting beautiful things out of rocks, practicing to fend off the next goblin invasion. You've got dwarves braving the wilds to bring home meat so your population doesn't starve. You've got trapmakers, siege engineers, miners, metalcrafters. All awesome.

And then there's the accountant.

The man deserves his drink.

I get this, I figured he was just stocktaking. Vigorously.
On a side note, I get this with my militia captain when i station him somewhere or he's training.

But hey, any dwarf who has the job of counting every loose stone in the entire fortress deserves to have his own personal barrel of booze.

I saw a barrel on my record keepers chair for no reason once. I can only assume this is what happened.

It's probably related to his record keeping being higher priority than stockpiling the barrel of booze, even though he's standing in the stockpile and could just drop it, record keeping's so important that he absolutely MUST go to his office and work, and the AI won't let him perform anything else at the same time.

This is quite true in real life as well.

It's pretty much accepted as fact that accountants like to drink and are good at drinking...hell, one of my professors even told us this in one of my accounting classes last year.  The same guy's teaching some of my masters-level classes next year as well.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

Conclusion: I guess I can ignore the fact that it's probably an AI error and pretend he's just a very stressed-out dorf. I just wish he'd share. :(

I've seen this in every 0.31.x fort where I've bothered to have a bookkeeper (ie. everything that wasn't just experimentation).
