A few more questions............ again.

Thanks in advance everyone has been gloriously helpful although the wiki does answer most questions i have one that i haven't been able to figure out.

My surgeons go straight for the adamantine strands for sutures i had 20 cut up dorfs eat up all my adamantine whats the deal with that, they had cloth n strands in the hospital room, but they went for the good stuff, those damn dorfs are worth more dead now then alive.  How do i stop them from doing that?

Second question which i've seen answered before but i did a search in the top right there looking for it but i couldn't find it, i blame the jack.  How do i move cages?  I have 10 goblins in a cage, i know that i can (D)ump them and it snatches all their stuff off, but how do I just move them into the area i want them to go, do i just have to disable the nearest garbage dumps untill where i want them to go is the closest? or is there an easier way.  Problem i have is it took a bunch of them to my massive stone garbage dump half way across the map, i want them to go to my goblin rehabilitation center i've mined out behind my barracks for "treatment".

Sorry, can't help you with the adamantine issue. As for the cage moving - you can build the cages (from the b menu), after that you can link them to levers for remote releasing. Or you can designate a custom stockpile (p-t) that only accepts goblin cages (remember to unforbid the cages if you dumped them before). If you want to move them using the dump menu, you'll have to disable all other garbage dump zones to make sure they end up in the right one.

edit: in case you didn't know yet, if you (b)uild the cages, you can press "x" at the menu where you choose the cage to use to see each cage separately instead of groups my material. That way, you can select a "goblin cage" instead of hoping that the "mangowood cage" you selected is the one with a goblin in it ;)

yeppp i got em moved and stripped put i dont seem to be able to link them to the cages, is there any other way to open them?  i can link levers to all of my animal cages but not my goblin cages edit** also i cannot link levers to my empty cages at the front door the empty ones.

that's odd, I never had trouble linking goblin cages to levers...

well, as alternative to that, you can designate a pit zone (i-p, I think) over an empty space and then assign the goblins for that. be warned though, goblin thieves (and master thieves) will escape as soon as a dwarf takes them out of the cage to drop them into the pit. For all regular fighting goblins it works fine however - just remember to strip them first, don't want a goblin bowman sitting in your pit shooting upwards ;)

hmmm probably a problem because i'm i reclaimed this fortress.  I'll try removing all my traps (of course they'll invade then) then relaying em all, assuming i can figure out how to do that.

yep reclaimed everything on the map with mass reclaim d b c or k and f.    Its ok i started a new map i'll try it out on this one.  I'm going with some outside defense this time and i'm having trouble getting my dorfs ontop of the walls to build floors for "rooms" outside, picture a big square, on flat ground, i cannot get an upstair to get ontop of the walls to finish a floor so they don't get rained on while training (its gona be a barracks) like right here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uobESZ49hbs&feature=related  thats what im trying to do, get ontop of the walls so i can floor the entire area, assuming you can do that to essentially make a roof, i mean you can do it with ponds and thats open space so i figured you could do it on walls.  But i've tried every dang staircase in the list and ramps and cannot get a ramp from the ground to the top of the wall.  i even made double walls just to test still no go on the stairs.

Build a ramp not stairs, that's the easiest thing. If you insist on stairs, then you'll need to construct a  'down' staircase above the 'up' staircase you've just built.

i've tried to build a ramp but for the life of me it wont build its obvious I'm doing something wrong but i'm not sure what, i have the wall... then i tried going around all different sides of it putting a ramp.  I looked at all the pictures of the stairs on the wiki it should be letting me build a ramp but it wont let me.

What exactly do you mean, "won't let you"?

You're at the base of the wall where you want to build the ramp. You push "b" for building. "C" for Construction. "r" for ramp. An X will appear. Move it around the screen with the arrow keys until it is in the correct position. If it is red, something is in the way. If it is green, hit "Enter". A menu of available construction materials pops up: wood, stone and/or metal bars. +/- to what you want, and hit "Enter" again. The ramp-to-be should appear, waiting for a dwarf with the proper skills to come dashing over and build it.

At what point does this break down for you?

Ramps need to have a wall against them for dwarfs to use them.  That wall/floor needs to be accessible so it can't have anything on top of it, since the dwarf will move onto the floor tile which is the top of the wall.

From the side:  RW

(Ramp, Wall)

Stairs work too but you need to construct a matching staircase on the next level.
So if you construct an up stair on the ground floor, you need to construct a down stair in the same location one level up

(Up Stairs, Down Stairs)

The down staircase will need to be constructed (not just designated for construction) before the up staircase can be placed.

About the adamantine thread issue.  I don't know of a complete solution for this, but there are a few things you can try, pick the one that works best for you.

1. Restrict doctors to a hospital burrow during medical procedures.  This also helps with forcing them to actually do the doctor-type stuff without removing all of their other labors.
1a. Restrict the doctors to a burrow that doesn't include the thread.  This one takes longer to set up, and seems more likely to result in bizarre behavior if you forget about it.
2. Forbid the threads unless you are using them.  The stuff is low-volume enough that this might be a better solution.
3. Lock the threads in a vault.  Make an adamantine-only stockpile where your miners can drop it off, but that has locked doors between it and the rest of the fort.  Don't forget to let your miners out when you're done :P

There's only 1 ramp, but there are two types of those kind of structures: designated and constructed

Designated means it's being dug out of existing rock.

Constructed means you are building it on an open floor or someplace where there is no rock wall that can be turned into stairs or ramps.

Sand and peat and etc counts as rock for building stairs, ramps, etc,  you can have sand stairs that work just fine.

You're not an idiot, I was confusing the two exactly as you are except i did it with up/down stairs. Every time I tried from the designation screen it failed miserably. then someone told me to try construction and it was MUCH easier.
