Well, as far as swamp dragons go, you could have all manner of sizes and strengths, so that while one species (e.g. the swamp dragon) may be equivalent to cats, others could be gargantuan. So, it potentially could be a "dinosaur" type situation, with a whole ecosystem going on, that just happens to be relatively scarce in terms of numbers, but nonetheless highly diverse.

I, for one, would like dragonfire to be a continuous stream of flame, rather than a series of small explosions. Since items and creatures already have specific heats, dragonfire melting armor and weapons doesn't sound too far off.

I personally think that with the physics-oriented direction DF is going in, a lot of things from The Flight of Dragons would fit in perfectly, as the book was intended to provide a feasible explanation for how dragons would have worked.
Good book.  Very well thought-out.

I've never found another person who'd even heard of it.  Now I have to look up the movie.

Yes, actually, I am trying to get myself banned.  I wish Toady would quit working on this worthless piece of junk and go back to teaching math.

The movie was actually based more on Gordon R Dickson's "The Dragon and the George", which is a good book, and a good series too.  The movie changed a number of thing that would make it impossible to continue with the series though.  And it added all the sciency stuff about dragons which "The Dragon and the George" lacked.

As far as the wings go, I don't like the idea of everything with wings being able to be downed by taking out a wing.  Too little variation.  It would basically just make dragons into larger forms of giant eagles.

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

They're kinda scrawny, though.

I'm in favor of Flight of Dragons + DF magic.  That way DF is getting some use out of it's physics and Dragons are still tough cookies.
