down sides to reveal?

Is there any downside to reveal in 31, like in 40 where your magma smelters wouldn't work?

Because of the HFS trying to path to dwarfs, your FPS will probably tank. I'm not sure if magma smelters will break, or if you'll run into issues with underground plants not growing properly, though.

The best method, IMO, is revealing, going through to note down the locations of useful things, and then unrevealing, removing any potential issues.

Yeah, DON'T UNPAUSE!

You can designate future dig spots and make all sorts of notes, and as long as you don't unpause the game before unrevealing it, you won't get the discovering the super fun zone message and spawing clowns to destroy your FPS.

Just a hint in case you hadn't thought of it: screen shot window (alt+print screen) and photoshop/gimp/multi-document paint program make for great note taking tools.

/edit just realised you mean notes as in in game 'N' notes. I don't use reveal but start a site and dig about a bit then quit and restart at the same site with screen shots, so ingame notes don't work for me.

Why take screen shots when you could press escape and tell it to dump the current map info, then select all levels and poof the game gets it all nice and organized for you.

Also, with reveal you will have the sheer joy of having all the magma and water revealed. Enjoy the it as the FPS sinks and burns.
