Why 'Slade'?

Possibly beause it's 'heavy rock'? (the Band of Noddy Holder)

or maybe demons are incarserated in their Slade Prison, somewhat like Norman Stanley Fletcher of the sitcom Porrige?

Does anyone know the actual origin of the word? :-)

Well, a slade, in some places, is a broad flat land (perhaps familiar to Noddy's lot, and possibly sounded right for Ronnie B's "middle of a wide moor" setting, but then he also liked the sound of words in his and Gerald Wiley's scripts so it could just be onomatapoeic with the soul-sucking granite walls of HMP).

I'm not sure if either of these Rightpondian cultural classics ever did (originally) wend their way to Randall's experience. What's fairly likely is that this word (or perhaps "slate", from a different perspective?) emmigrated to the US. And then it could have eventually morphed its meaning to refer to somewhat more desolate rock basins that look like "the bones of the world". (And/or it sounded equally hard and 'final' and inert, and it had no direct inspiration.)

Perhaps someone is a fan of British Glam Rock?
