Dead Civilization
« on: July 24, 2010, 09:21:16 pm »

I'm in my second year of my fortress and the Dwarven caravan has just come for the second time.  Neither year I've had a liaison.

I know dead liaisons get replaced so I'm hoping I'll get one sooner or later... how long does this typically take?

Right now I'm assuming my liaison was killed during worldgen, but oif anyone has any other ideas why I haven't been getting my liaison, I'd like to hear them.

Are you playing a 'dead' civilization? That could explain why theres no liason.

There is a bug right now that is preventing liasons from actually respawning that is fixed in .12 (yay! No more worrying about aging liasons who may die on you!). Not sure about your case as liasons should be replaced, but thats for living civilizations that have fortresses. Maybe yours was destroyed and you can still use that civ because theres a few importaint figures still alive.

Unlikely, I've only genned 20 years in... though I suppose its a possibility.

Edit: Looks like 20 years is long enough for that to happen...

Some info from legends...

The most recent king died in 18, burned to death by a mountain titan's fire.  He had fought this titan three times... in 14 when he first became king, in 17, and finally in 18.  This is ironic because he actually worshipped the very same titan...  He had worshipped the titan since 9, and started worshipping a hydra in 15 (likely because the bastard titan attacked him).

The most recent liaison died in 14, killed by the same titan who would later kill the king.  The liaison's only son worships the titan who killed his dad and king.

Oh, and heres some info on the titan himself...

Arak Budraptor, the Murk of Skies (which makes sense because the Dwarven capitol is "Cloudroofs")

A great six-legged quadruped (yay contradictions!) composed of flame.  Associated with nature, mountains, minerals, metals, caverns, and animals.  28 kills in a mere 20 years.

So... what are the advantages/disadvantages of a dead civilization?  Should I continue or restart?

I'd like to point out the a six-legged quadruped is not a contradiction. It has 6 legs, but only uses 4 to walk (hence quadruped). The other 2 just stick up into the air.

The advantages are you don't get nobles. The disadvantages are you won't get dwarven caravans or immigration.

I've already gotten both caravans and migrants.

Civ has only been dead for 2 years, that might be part of the reason why...

I think the first 2 migrant waves are hard-coded, but after that I think they will stop. I am surprised about the caravan. I didn't think that would show up.

The civ might be dead, but the people might not be?

In legends there's always [group name] formed [civ name] in [area name] and then there's [city name] and "abandoned [city name] and fled into [area name]" typically, after which, the survivors form a new [group name] ... so where do the caravans really come from? Does anything show up in the (c)iv screen?

... or maybe the first caravans are hard coded too IDK

The crossbow squad, 'The Bolts of Fleeing' wouldn't even show up.
