Walls and Rivers
« on: August 05, 2010, 12:51:30 am »

If I build a wall across a river, will goblins, etc swim under it? Does it make a difference if it is a brook or a river?

In cross-section;
Code: [Select]

   #
   #   <--- wall
___#___
~~~~~~~  <--river
#######  <--soggy bottom
I want to fence off an area for outdoor farming, and I'd like fishing and water access also. I don't need to get in and out, becuase the entrance is elsewhere.
I really don't want to go for some massive engineering project to temporarily divert the river while I build some fortifications on the river bed.
I don't think goblins will attempt to path through if the water is more than 3/7. I'm not sure about undead or creatures with [AQUATIC] [AMPHIBIOUS] or [SWIMS_INNATE]
Greiger's is actually correct...  sadly enough.  The emotional circumstance processor is still turned on, with a randomly rolled up personality, but they can't express themselves or take control...  they can only cry.
Brooks on the top are like regular ground, don't know about them.
Wouldn't it just be easier to build the wall on the other bank?
Can't swim under brooks, they're magical.
Rivers however, they can, if the goblins bring cave crocodiles.
Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
Also, you can fish through grates.  So you can build the wall and just grate over the water.
Dragons can also swim I think. I had a dragon pass through a river to get down to my dining hall. It was quite Fun.
At least they can do that now. Back in 40d, they certainly thought they were magma immune. They... weren't.
Brooks are full of natural brook wall tiles which are exactly like fortifications and presumably represent a jumble of loosely packed rocks.
If you have an actual river, swimming enemies will be able to come under the wall. Goblins aren't good swimmers and won't do it, but sometimes they come mounted on amphibious animals like giant toads, and there is presently a bug where such mounts will try to swim into your fort and drown their riders: http://bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=926
