It's obvious! Polite goblins are waiting for an invitation!

Valuing life seems too close to an aesthetic rule for me, I think.
Only in Dwarf Fortress is the value of life placed as "aesthetic."

Now I don't know too much about the siege AI .. haven't had a siege in 31.10 yet

Back in 40d though I noticed some things.

1. when a marksdwarf shot the leader of a siege party, his minions retreated but the siege wasn't called off.
2. groups with many marksgoblins were more reluctant to attack than their comrades
3. it might be a coincidence but several groups have moved and regrouped before invading me. if they just chased the same cat or if they made a conscious decision .. i dont know

I have not noticed them stopping or retreating due to a leader being caged though.

The crossbow squad, 'The Bolts of Fleeing' wouldn't even show up.
I have an art blog now.

How is this even possible? This doesn't even make sense.

They all died. Well except the caged ones.

I got more with the next migrant wave :P

Anyway, this is happening with more than just caged goblin leaders.

It seems whenever an ambush party's leader gets put out of commission (death, caged, ect) their minions just stand around. These 3 groups are standing where their leaders died and haven't moved in a month.

Dunno if the same happens with sieges. Haven't had one on this map yet.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

This is why I always stagger my cage and weapon traps, normally with more of the latter.  When the lead gobbo traps himself, the rest just walk back and forth over the weapon traps until they make mincemeat of themselves.

I noticed this with my Murdertron 9000 trap rig (single corridor lined with steel saw blades something like 15-20 traps) in 31.10. Didn't bother me overmuch as I had already locked everyone inside (leaving the long, spindly path through the Murdertron 9000 the only way in) and couldn't care less about migrants.
