Or a choice of multiple worlds to embark in at the same time, for that matter?

Do I have to abandon my current fortress if I want to start a new one in the same world?

From the main menu it looks like I only have the option of creating a new world or accessing my previous saved fortresses, but not starting a new embark without creating a new world (and getting rid of the one my current fortress is in)?

I want to try a new fortress but I want to have my other one ready in case I mess things up and I don't want to lose my current world in any case...

Am I missing something or is this just the limits of the game?

Thanks

No. DF worlds have their own time, so it would only be possible if you could leave your other fortress on autopilot while you made a new one. Or dear lord, play two fortresses at the same time - something for which vast majority of us don't have neither the hardware or the brainware to cope with.

What do you mean by this?

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.

One way to sort of do this.

In your current fortress press escape and select export.
There will be a world parameters text files written to the dwarf fortress folder.

Paste the contents of this file into the end of the data/init/world_gen.txt (modify the TITLE: tag to give it a nice name)

--

This will let you do to main menu, Design new world with parameters and select to recreate your existing world.

Do so, to create a new world (which will be a copy of the first one) you can now start playing in this copy without affecting your original world. (by default will be "region2-xxxx" in your data/save folder, original world will be "region1-xxxx")

Making new worlds does not replace your existing ones, I currently have around 30 different worlds in my save folder for .10...

If you want to experiment with a new fort, generate a new world and embark, your previous fortress will remain unmolested.
