easier way to save game?
« on: July 17, 2010, 01:01:32 pm »

So after playing 4 hours the game crashed and I lost all progress.  :'(
Is the only way to save to quit? No autosave/quicksave feature?

The Toad hops in mysterious ways.
This pure mountain spring water is indispensable. Literally. I'm out of paper cups.

There is an autosave. You can enable it in the data/init/d-init.txt.

I think the backup feature is a bit sporradic. Sometimes it backs up the old save, sometimes it backs up the new(wrong) one removing the old save.

By default, the game auto-saves on every season change.

Otherwise, you've just got to get used to playing a game that's still in alpha.

every time before you do something dangerous or after you've done something great, save the game. it's a pain, yes, but it's better than screwing up and loosing it all.

Well I played multiple years but when I restarted DF I started where I had previously started.   ::)
So it was some bug then, with saving...

I think I'll just start saving more often then

Autosave is NOT on by default, set it to SEASONAL and backups to YES.

Only in dwarven culture is alcohol poisoning a death worthed investigating, while being impaled through several toes, a eye, and a thumb from a spiraling water[3] is not.  Because everyone knows, the only way a dwarf could get alcohol poisoning is if someone put poison into the alcohol.

Get a travel alarm or a timer or something. Set it to go off every so often (I set mine for 90 minutes.) When it goes off, save.
