Drowning Chamber turned out to be a kiddie pool...
« on: July 15, 2010, 01:09:06 pm »

So, i made a super convoluted entryway into my fort that included part of the entryway tunneling under my fort's surface-level four-square-wide moat.
I got the brilliant idea to make that stretch of tunnel into a flood chamber that draws on the water that will eventually be flowing over my moat.

The flood hatches work, the drainage hatches and pump system i built under the entryway to make the stupid thing reset-able works, but...
It's just not lethal.

The dwarves i mercilessly used as guinea pigs didn't die, as they had ample time to swim under to get out... even though they didn't know how to swim.

What can i do to make that, uh, not happen? Set the trap to lock wall grates over the up ramps?

Yeah set up bars or floor grates connected to a lever or a liquid-activated pressure plate.

I'd like to know what you did as well ....

... because my kiddie pool always turns into a drowning chamber.  :(

Did you DROP the dwarves in, or just fill it with water while they were standing there? When dwarves FALL into water, they're stunned, and drown.

Ah, really?
My design didn't have them dropped into a pool or anything, it just flooded the tunnel with water one z-level above.

Yeah. You'll need to dig down another level, and build a drawbridge or something so you can drop them in.

This is odd. Usually in Dwarf Fortress, a kiddie pool turns out to be a drowning chamber.

Hence he should have tried to build a kiddie pool, and not a drowning chamber.
I can confirm this would have worked.
Probably.

To drown people by flooding, there must be no exit. If there is an exit, then the targetted bipeds will often escape.

So, make sure you can lock up your drowning chamber. And don't be surprised if any trolls or other building destroyers break any obstacles between them and getting out.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

if you have the ends of the hall one level lower than the middle, you can have the water enter the lower ends first and then flood towards the middle.  Bad guys don't path down through water to get out while they can still swim above it.  Once the water is to 7 it is usually too late for them to try to escape.

Code: [Select]
___  XXX ______bad guys_______ XXX  _____
XXX\____/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX\____/XXXXX

water fills the ditches first.
