Are dwarfs smart enough to drink on their own?

Are dwarfs smart enough to drink on their own? I have plenty of food but not too much alcohol and i plan on just letting it run while my miners hallow out the rest of the cliff. My fear is i come back and they've all died of thirst despite there being like 8 ponds just outside my fort.

They will drink water from a running river as a second-to-last resort, and water from a murky pool as a last resort. They won't be happy about it, and will work slower, but they won't die of thirst. Usually.

It can be helpful to set up a water source zone with the i key and put it on some nearby water so they don't wander around wherever.
