Invaders: OFF - 0.31.08 vs 0.31.10
« on: July 13, 2010, 01:04:00 pm »

I've got a fortress I am playing with Invaders: OFF so no one to disturb my quiet building.  I don't plan on doing any fighting (caverns either) for a long while.  Is there any reason for me to move to 0.31.10 from my current 0.31.08?  I've read the changelog and it all seems to be combat related.

Invaders off means you will get no megabeasts, FB's, goblins, or kobolds.

You will however still get the local wildlife. Some of the local wildlife is very hostile.

Good point.  I couldn't help but build walls anyway, though, so they should not be a problem.

If you wall off a cavern you can secure it, but you will almost certainly need to escort your masons with soldiers to keep them safe so they can build the walls.

You'll be fine against any wildlife (barring maybe a GCS) with just a handful of well trained dwarves clad in steel.

A GCS is still very dangerous even to a well trained dwarf in steel. It only takes a single lucky hit, and the dwarf is doomed. The poison will kill the dwarf.

Claiming the caverns and eventually wiping out all wildlife in the upper cavern cost me half a dozen dwarves. At the time they were wearing masterwork steel plate, masterwork steel shirts, and were legendary or near legendary in combat skills. All losses were due to GCS's.

My previous experience with GCS in .31 is that they get torn to bits by an average dwarf with an axe.  Did something change in 31.10?  I haven't encountered a GCS yet there.

The GCS will still die pretty easily to bladed weapons, its just that it only needs to get in a single bite. One bite and the dwarf is doomed.

The poison will finish off the dwarf even if the dwarf is otherwise completely untouched. This means that after you hack the GCS to pieces the dwarf will die several days later anyways.
