Simple & shiny war games

Any war games that involve a lot of units but is mostly just fun to watch and doesn't take much skill? Especially this one game that was a side scroller and you controlled a bunch of tribal colorful guys...forgot what it was called.

The game you're thinking of is Patapon, I believe.

The foreground is all black, but the background is usually one color scheme, from what I remember.

Total Annihilation (which might be free now?) or any of its freeware clones.  Just crank the tech-level and difficulty down, build hordes of low tier units while your opponent does the same, and watch the anachronistically-pretty sparks and particles fly.  I enjoy it myself.

Multiwinia.
A simple, artsy and fun strategy game.
Gameplay boils down to basic strategy, without having all these annoying gimmicks of most RTS games.
Also games are pretty quick(5-20 minutes) unlike most other strategy games.

Multiwinia is alright, but Darwinia is the better game, though there are fewer units on your side (and giant swarms of enemies).

Well I'm in the process of playing through it.
After the first missions I'm really not impressed though.
It's repetitive and I rather command my darwinians around, then using this squads.

Will it get better later?

It does get a bit more involved later on but it's nothing like Multiwinia. I played Darwinia a LONG time ago and enjoyed it, even though it ended up dragging out a lot. It was pretty tough to push myself through the first few boring levels, but I guess it became enjoyable.

Multiwinia on the other hand was a lot more fun for me, it was exactly what I was craving to play.

Hmm.
So still passive enemies?

I had hoped for more...

It's quite fun once you've gotten the apc/turrets and certain upgrades, and even more once you go up against the red darwinians (which is, unfortunately, pretty close to the end...).
