You can hit any creature with a catapult I think.  Build a field of statues for him to play with and aim your siege engines at it.

You're probably thinking of ballistas, which are indeed capable of killing indiscriminantly - catapults, at least in 40d, were only known to hurt hostile creatures.

The following is true for 40d. I am assumming that nothing has changed for the new version.

Wrong. Catapults won't be aimed at friendlies, but anything in the impact tile will take damage.
