As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.

Did you mod your world creation parameters to eliminate the caverns?  Doing so causes plump helmets (and other underground crops) to be unavailable.

No, I changed it to have one cavern. I still can bring sweet pods and quarry bushes and cave wheat along. Plus other underground crops.

That's quite strange. Well, if you're doing an above ground fortress you'd want to use mainly above ground crops right?

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

Occasionally, certain environments capable of supporting a plant will fail to have any of the plant present - for example, you might have a level 3 cavern devoid of nether-caps (happened to me personally) or a level 1 cavern without any plump helmets (also happened to me in the same fort), which is clearly what's happened to you. This also happened in previous versions - in one fortress I ran in 40d that had an underground river, there were never any plump helmet shrubs growing in my tower-cap farm.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I can confirm this can happen from time to time, especially when you only have 1 cavern layer

This has happened to me a couple times. In one world the only underground plants I had were tunnel tubes. No other underground trees, no plump helmets, no quarry bushes, just tunnel tubes.

Sounds cool. More room on the dwarven caravan to bring goods less useless than plump helmets

Indeed, haven't found a single nether-cap yet despite having breached all cavern layers. The same way, I believe my previous fortress was completely oblivious to the existence of blood-thorn.

I changed one world to only have two cavern layers, and I wound up genning a world that had no underground crops present.  Didn't play in that world very long.

Yeah, but I'm using underground plants to jumpstart my fortress. Also, I only did one cavern layer to increase FPS and get rid of excess z-levels. It worked, too. 20-30 FPS embark to 60-100. I mean, what good is an underground area for when you're doing an aboveground fort? Basements? Also, I've had cavern layers with nothing. Nothing at all. No trees, no shrubs. Just mud.
