The dwarves weave tools into their beards and just leave them hanging there when not in use. It must be reaaaaaally silly looking to watch a dwarven carpenter planing a board. :> A seasoned dwarf with many legendary labors effectively has a Swiss Army Beard.

This theory wins everything.

Dwarfery in general. I've been to real mines, and they freak me out after about 15 minutes. That dwarves can live down there, and without modern convenience astounds me.
As a side note, I always like to give my miners preferential treatment, given that I am native to what was once a mining town.
