Fortress Mode Suggestions
« on: June 20, 2010, 10:11:56 pm »

For those of us who are always forgetting what needs to be done:

Make one of the nobles, like the mayor or other responsible person, come up with a list of things a "proper fortress" would have in a sub window under his thoughts and preferences. The items on the list would be things like craft workshop, farm plot, still, carpenter workshop, barracks, stockpile types, etc. Big basic stuff like that which you may forget to put up, or rebuild after some angry dwarves trash the fort.

If you already have a workshop or whatever would be on the list, it isn't shown. If you don't care what he thinks you need, don't look at it in his T&P window.

I always thought the mayor should do this, since he's the guy listening to the people. His Noble screen could show the feelings of the fortress as a whole.

"They are ecstatic. They have been worrying about the lack of a military lately. They have been worrying about the supply of pants getting low. Some have complained about lack of homes. All praise the legendary dining room."

Information could become more detailed if the mayor has high social skills.

I don't really see this as being necessary or that useful. Dwarves asking you to stockpile pants or warning that booze is running out works but it really should be the player's task to get things running again after a disaster. Only necessities warrant a warning. Whether people complain about the lack of a militia should really be tied to how threatened they feel.

It could help DF noobs get thier fort in order.

The player will be the one keying in construction orders and wading through menus.

I did not suggest the mayor start asking for or putting in work orders and designating trade depot's(or whatever) to be constructed on the site without input from the player. I also did not ask for a "warning". The last thing DF needs is more announcement spam.

How are our new brothers and sisters to find this miraclous list hidden in the expedition leader/mayor/baron/king's thoughts? They'll need some way to find it, and it needs to be an EASY way to find it (ie, read it very early in the including help documentation).

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

How "miraclous" is it for the noble theoretically in charge of the fort, or some aspect of it, to have some idea about what the place needs?
Is it so outrageous for the weapon quartermaster guy to think we need more arrows or armor or something? How about the militia commander wanting more men or training?

Yes, this stuff could be mentioned in the help documentation or on the wiki. Looking at thoughts and preferences is really easy.

To a new player, it would be a miraclous list. So it would be something they should be able to find easily. In the begining, nothing is really easy to a new player, so finding this list would be something that should be made as simple as possible. Remember, DF has (q)uery, loo(k), and (t)ied into--- 3 different kinds of "look". It can take a while just to master those, let alone learning that you can "look" at your dwarves and drill into different reports on their current state.

I really like this idea. I think it should be dependent on the social skills of the mayor(count, baron, king) kind of like record keeper.

I was thinking the other day that dwarves should be a little more self-sustaining, so that newbies can get into the game easier, and just to provide additional entertainment.

Let's say that your dwarves have been sleeping on the ground because you don't know how to make beds, or even that they NEED beds. A dwarf could get fed up with this, grab an axe, cut down some trees, build a workshop, and make a bed.
And when they go hungry, instead of hunting vermin, dwarves with the appropriate labors could also make little farms for themselves and grow tower-caps. It wouldn't have to be anything too fancy.

A downside is that newbies might think this is the way things are supposed to be done, and so always just wait for the dwarves to do everything themselves.

But think of the stories that could emerge from this sort of thing! Players are always entertained when dwarves catch the fey, but there could easily be milder forms of it. Let's say a child has no toys to play with, and so grabs a rock and heads to the masonry to make one himself. Or a bored clothier who notices that everyone is running around in tattered clothes, despite abundant supplies of cloth, and starts making clothes for everyone. Or just himself if that's his personality.

Stuff like that.
