Body and Soul traits are the traits listed in green for good and red for bad. Personality is listed in white.

A simple system to make children inherit from parents would be for each trait:
1). Start with the average of both parents for a given trait.
2). roll 1d20, and on 19+ give the child a mutation bonus of -25% ~ +25% for that trait.

The result is that children will tend to resemble their parents.

Well I think it might be better if whenever a child talks (just beeing near they don't actually talk) they have a change of taking over these traits this could be a pretty low change but they would end up with a more learning based personality that still resembles the parents.

The Nature vs Nurture idea, where both are probably affecting some characteristics.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Or perhaps we could include both (just spamming ideas)
A baby inherits 50% parental traits and the rest is gained from contect with others.
Or perhaps traits like strong could be almost entirly inheritit traits like conecentration would be only partly inheritit and specific traits like fear of rats would be completly from nurturing.

It would be more likely to have body traits like that, then soul more random and personality more environmentally made.

If you averaged out personalities, you'd end up with a variance of 2 points sooner or later.

So we to make it so that a variation becomes so incredible strong that it keeps things moving has perhaps completly reversing a personality? or randomly moving it to an extreme (often people are simmulair or opposites of their parents.)

Make a few inheritable family traits, and the rest more or less random.

Either way, a lot is inherited. How much is genetic and how much is unconsciously learned? Same for randomization of the resulting traits. These questions may be important in the real world, but in Dwarf Fortress I don't think they are. Also, nature can make a huge difference, regardless of whether it does or not on average.

Perhaps if DF goes into detail in separating genetic vs culture vs physiological effects from the environment vs et cetera this will become relevant.

Do you happen to have some solid references for this?

I'm not asking for references because I mean to contradict you...
I actually think it's true, too, but I've never had solid references to prove it.
As far as I knew it was largely guesswork and we didn't have a lot of data supporting either side.

I've had discussions regarding this numerous times with people, and if you just happened to know some good resources regarding this... they'd be really handy. Don't waste time finding them if you don't already have them, though, I can go look again myself.

To summarize;

Provide references
if you have any very good ones;
don't waste time searching

Scientifically proven
Important to know

Ep journal dot net
It has a number of links
To relevant things

Can be hard to find
May take hours of trawling
But in there for sure.

Personality traits are certainly inheritable, be it through nature or nurture, environment probably exacerbates the preponderance to certain traits.

eg my father's family trait is being uncommunicative, taciturn procastrinators, while my mothers' is dominant and extrovert. My sister and her daughter are carbon copies of her, while my brother and I are more like my father. We can be sociable at times, but as our female familymembers tend to take over any social event this causes us men to not develop our stunted skillz too much.
Benefit is that not talking all the time leaves more time for drinking. ;)

I wonder if my sister has a son, it will take after my father, or her husband. (ADHD extrovert personality)
