Quick question regarding migrants
« on: June 14, 2010, 04:00:29 am »

If I set the init so that migrants don't appear in .06, (POP_CAP:7 or similar) will children born to the dwarves still reach adulthood, and allow a 'generational' fortress?

Just curious, before you ask. It's a bit much to have to wait for dwarves to reach adulthood, but I do get annoyed with the constant stream of migrants sometimes.

Hi!

Yes, they will. I am playing such generational fortress (though I currently have to scrap them too often for version update to reach any real generation shift).

Note, however, that 2 to 3 immigration waves will come during the first year, even if you set the pop cap below 7. There is no known way to prevent those initial immigration waves, but they seem to respond in their size somewhat to your activity/created wealth etc.

Also note that there is an init setting for the baby quota in your fortress which you may also want to keep an eye on.

EDIT: My .06 fortress hasn't reached that point, though, but I don't think it has changed from the other 31.xx versions where I have seen them grow up.

Ah, that's a good sign then. Might start a generational fort after all...

My init has children set on a limit of 200. Plenty 'nuff, in my opinion.

You do know that saves from any 0.31 version are compatible with any other 0.31 version? You just need to paste the raws of the one version you copied to over the raws in the save-file.

In 40d a way to avoid immigration was not to touch the earth. As long as I built only on the surface, I got no immigrants at all.

Except that some of the bugs which couldn't be fixed by changing the raws carried over with the save, such as the duplicate mayor bug.

There is the option of making dwarves reach adulthood earlier. 12 years is a very long time indeed.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Realistic, though. Which is really what counts.
