Author Topic: [.31.06] Designate for smoothing and digging at the same time?  (Read 701 times)

I just noticed something in my current fortress.

While I was designating some walls to be dug out and some others to be smoothed, I messed up a little and designated various pieces of walls that I wanted dug out to be smoothed instead.

To fix this, designated the wall to be dug out again, without first removing the original designation.

What ended up happening was that an engraver smoothed out the wall, and then Urist McMiner arrived to dig the smoothed wall out again.

So, in essence, this piece of wall had two designations simultaneously: dig and smooth.

I don't remember things being this way in 40d, and I can't really think of any advantages to the designations behaving this way. But I'm not confident enough that this is a (new) bug to actually report it.

Is this a new feature? a new issue? Are there merits to having two designations on a tile simultaneously? :o

Also occurs in early 0.31.x versions (.3, I think I saw it in). Haven't seen a bug report, but I'm not lurking on the tracker, and I haven't seen anyone else mention it in the forums. Doesn't appear to be any disadvantage to it, though it would be interesting to find out if it's always the engraver who gets to it first, or if it varies - and if it's possible to remove the wall while it's been smoothed, and what happens if it is.

If it happens in the other order - the wall gets dug out, before it gets smoothed - the engraver will start smoothing the floor that is left behind after the wall is dug out.
This happened to me yesterday in my fort.

With smoothing I guess the disadvantage is minor to non-existent, however, if the same behaviour also happens with engraving and digging, I suppose there would be rare cases where miners might end up defacing engravings.
It's this way in 40d too.
I guess it's by design then. Or just that nobody pointed it out. Whatever. :)
