Help on a job application
« on: May 26, 2010, 01:16:05 pm »

So, I'm filling out an application for GameStop, and so far I've got everthing... except the part labeled "Office/Distribution Center Skills / Software Knowledge". (and References, but I can take care of that)
It's got three lines: General Office/Dist. Center Skills, Office Machine/Dist. Ctr. Equipment Knowledge, and PC Software Knowledge.

What exactly is it asking me? My "Software Knowledge" is pretty extensive, but I think it's bad taste to put douchebaggy laughter followed by "Are you sh!tting me?!" down on a job application. And since it's a retail position I'm applying for, I don't know how or why distribution center skills are going to help. And would it help that I'm certified in the state of Florida(I live on Long Island, by the way) as a Data Entry Specialist with an input rate of >240kpm(it's gonna take some practice getting that up) and accuracy >90-95%? Or at least I was, last time I checked.

They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I told them I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard.
... Yes, the hugs are for everyone.  No stabbing, though.  Just hugs.

I always thought GameStop was one of those mirror-test employers.  That's pretty indepth for sitting around talking about vidjya games all day.

As for your experience, I'd put it down.  Sure.  Anything helps.

Also, put down the software that they would most likely be interested in you knowing.

For example, if I only had space for three:

MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc)
Games (PC, name some consoles)

And if you have any company-specific software experience, like an inventory tracking system.

Well, I've never worked in an office, and the only other place I've worked was a packaging plant, which I guess is useful for a distrobution center, but I was looking at a retail position.

And for software, I've never used MS Office, except for today when I printed the application out, but I can tell it's pretty much the stunted rape-baby of most every piece of standard Windows softare that Windows comes with. And I can learn new software pretty quickly.

My guess is that they want to know prior experience in working with regular office machines and being able to interface with people, working in a warehouse and being able to put something on a pallet or in a crate, and are you capable of typing and moving a mouse.

Yes it is for a retail sales position, but you realize that they have actual offices where people do accounting, HR, shipping, receiving, etc, store layout and design, marketing, etc.  The stores don't get a fedex shipment from EA on a regular basis, they order loads to a central office and ship out what is needed to the stores based on the stores inventory needs.  Someone

So they use that application form for most of their positions.  Should you end up not treating it as a "just-a-job" job, and want to transfer within the company, they have your initial skill set on file and look for other matches.  Could be that (not knowing how old you are) after college and the market is bad, you could move to a more formal position with the company and have a foot in the door because A) you have worked there for a while and B) you have a degree and most importantly C) you were a great employee and didn't piss off too many customers or copy too much software..

Also if you re-apply to them at a later date, they will likely have the original on file.

Incidentally I know two people that used fake info to work at a fast food joint for exactly one day each.  This was years ago.  They had a great time... the stories I can tell.. acting completely stupid and doing things that would, essentially, get you fired.  But they didn't care because they didn't expect to get paid anyway, and they never went back and kept their uniforms to wear as a joke.  One of them also managed to get a job as the easter bunny at a mall.  That was a hard one to get in... they do criminal background checks and drug tests etc since you'd be dealing with really little kids.  Who knew the easter bunny had it so rough?

But (in regards to acting like a drunken dwarf at a fast food employer) we're all much more grown up than that, right??

Be sure to mention Battle Toads during you interview (assuming you get one). Its a newish game that gamestop helped fund and theyve had a HUGE success with it.
