Curiously I happen to be taking a partial course in proctology this semester.

Yes, go see a doctor, not only anal fissures can be signals of crohn's or other hairy diseases, but if untreated they can become chronic (which is bad) or even turn into fistulae, which is even worse. Surgery for treating fistulae can lead to loss of continence, and we all know this is not fun at all.

If it is just hemorrhoids it is a lesser concern, unless they increase in size and cause frequent pain, if so surgical treatment might be needed.

And for those talking about anal amputation, google for "PPH surgery". I'm not posting a link to that here.
