Inda vows to form anti ACTA-alliance
« on: June 02, 2010, 11:02:13 pm »

So Inda and a few other countries aren't too happy about the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement that the EU, US, Japanese and some other nations are trying to get going. The agreement was created behind closed doors and deals with intellectual property laws, namely the strengthening of them to benefit coorperations and buisnesses at the expense of pretty much everyone else.

From the wiki:
Quote
The negotiations for the ACTA treaty are conducted behind closed doors by a select group of over 30 countries. The treaty was developed outside of normal IP venues such as the World Intellectual Property Organization and the World Trade Organization (post TRIPs). The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Public Knowledge filed a FOIA request which was denied.[2][8]  In October 2007, the USA, the European Commission, Switzerland, and Japan  first announced that they would negotiate ACTA. Since then the following countries joined the negotiations: Australia, Canada, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, and United Arab Emirates.

Good on India for standing up to this, They seem to be focusing on the medical aspect of it, but hopefully they'll do something about al the other crap thats in this too.

India is just doing this because they're going for their own reasons, not so that you can keep your casual pirating experience.

Don't get me wrong, I hate ACTA, but India's not doing this for you.

Well, piracy is one of the most important elements of a country's technological development. Oh, I'm sorry, "reverse-engineering".

Because I definatly said or implied that I thought the entire nation of India was standing up to this for my benefit...

Wait, holy shit, there it is. Thanks for calling me on that man, dunno what I was thinking.

This isn't about pirating, it's not even about the medical patents and other stuff India is primarily concerned about (BTW I think I mentioned in my post that that's the reason they're doing this.. Oh yeah I did) it's about the erosion of civil liberties and freedoms that will come if this thing works as they want it too. It's about deliberatly excluding certain countries from the agreement so they can screw them over in future.

But no, you're right, piracy is the important topic here...

I don't trust much of anything that the government does behind closed doors.

Yeah, "behind closed doors" is inherently not trustworthy. After all, if we're to be able to trust something, we have to be allowed to know the details.

If that sounds sarcastic, it's because I'm tired.
