Animals, cages, and you!
« on: June 13, 2010, 07:09:26 am »

Yeah, I've got some animals from the passing merchants that I either want to saughter or let loose to breed. Problem is, I can't figure out how to let them out, or in the case of the less docile ones, chop them to bits. Help?

Hi!

These are all animals from the merchants, right? Then, you can let all of them loose and then slaughter those you want to slaughter.

In order to let the animals loose, you have to 'b'uild the cage ('b'uild->'j' cage).
Once the cage is built, 'q'uery it. It should show that animal so-and-so is in it. From the 'q'uery screen, press 'a'ssign which allows you to select which creature should go into that cage. Unselect the animal that is currently in the cage.
You will have to wait until a dwarf releases the animal.

Note that this does not work for vermin creatures, which have to be released by linking a lever to the cage and then using the lever to open it, but I suppose you don't mean vermin, do you?

To slaughter the animals, you can go via 'z'status and then the animals tab and simply select the animals that should be readied for butchering. Note, however, that some animals are NOT listed there as they are not regular pets for your dwarves. You can still slaughter them by using 'v'iew on them on the main screen and then look at their 'p'references  screen. That should offer you an option to 's'laughter them.

just some extra advice, although I'm not too sure if it still happens on the new versions, but sometimes when your trying to build the cages it wont label it as 'dog cage' or 'bull cage' but just whatever material it's made out of, and if you've got alot of cages this can be a pain in the ass to find that one particular cage.

What I do is have a few cages on standby next to the stockpile and, when your assigning animals, it will show which ones are caged or not, so you can just move the animal to your already built cages and then release him without the hassle of building 30 cages just to find one.

also I never realized you could link the cage to a lever to release vermin, I was always just viewing the cage/trap with 'k' then the animal inside and ordering my dwarves to dump it. :P

You can press "x" from within the build cage menu and it will provide a more detailed description of each cage.  That's worked without fail for me.

That's a shame. I checked the pets section of the wiki and found foxes listed, but when I released my merchant bought tame fox it doesn't appear in the ingame list. Will it eventually be adopted as normal or should I make a new hat?

It might be that foxes become regular pets when you have the Dungeon Master (I never got him, so I can only recount what I have read on the boards). The Dungeon Master does change some of the availabilities.

As long as the fox is not listed in the status screen, you can't make it a valid target for adoption, so it will never become a pet. However, if you have a dwarf who likes foxes, you can put the fox in a cage and put that cage somewhere where the dwarf will see it, giving him a happy thought about a wonderful creature in a cage. I am not sure whether they also get positive thoughts from free-roaming animals (but I think they don't).

Also note that when you train animals (the command says "train war dog" or "train hunting dog", but the dwarves will actually pick any appropriate animal), those trained animals can be assigned to dwarves giving them a kind of pseudo-pet status. However, you can not choose directly which animal gets trained and you can't choose which animal a dwarf gets when assigning him a work animal (they are considered a big pool and you can only set the number of animals the dwarf should get, not which).

For instance, IIRC, giant felines will not be available for pets, but you can train them and thus make them assigned work animals (and giant tigers are wonderful hunters).

Remember that they won't train animals in cages. If you want a particular beast trained first, cage up all others until it's done.

Also, I think they move down the animals list (the list you see when choosing who to cage/tie up) while training. Probably needs more testing though.
