yeah once you get a military going, a group of them should be able to take out most beasts unless the drip toxins or breathe poisonous gas, then they may survive only to track it back into the fort!

Your main problems will be non-organic beasts and blobs.  With enough blades, you should be able to take them down.  I've had hammer dwarfs and lashers remove arms/legs, and if it has an organic head, a mace/hammer dwarf can hit it and burst the brain, so you should even do well with those once their skill level gets up.

But you're worried about time right now, so focus on the axedwarfs!

I've had success with linking into an above-ground pool.  Other than a Fortification, it's pretty much a standard tunnel tapping into the pool directly.

My fisherdwarf now has a safe place to fish from and I've caught several turtles.

So far, I haven't been able to kill anything more threatening than a berzerk child, I'll need some help.

EDIT: Nevermind. Merchants took care of it.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.
