Floors...
« on: November 02, 2007, 11:42:00 am »

Simple wish - it would be nice if you could build stuff on floor tiles, like new walls, stairs etc. Right now you have to plan rather excruciatingly beforehand and your designs also end up really inflexible cause of this. If you later decide that maybe you want an extra floor on a building you'll be rather screwed cause you've already floored/roofed everything.

Course, I just hope that it's technically possible to achieve this :P

Anyway, this is a minor wish, nothing to fret over too much.

I don't think there's very much preventing you, at the moment.  If you want large scale changes, you can just remove all your walls/floors and rebuild them.  For simpler stuff, well...

First off, remember that a ceiling is exactly equal to a floor, so adding a new floor to a building is one of the simplest changes you could make!  You just have to tear out your down staircase and replace it with an up/down one and you're set.

As for building new walls on constructed floors, well, you can at least remove the floor and put wall where it used to be.

Yes, you can just remove individual floor tiles, then build what you want from the adjacent ones.  It would be sort of convienent, though, to have the ability to build floorlike things like stairs "on" floors, having the game automatically remove the floor tile as it replaces it with the stairs or whatever.

To be really honest, two things that would make renovating really easy are

+fixing the diagonal rewall glitch
and
+not having dwarves stand on the floor tile they're removing

Something sort of weird about this is that, if you can construct on a constructed floor, you might as well also be allowed to use the material that went into the floor immediately for the new construction, since you get it back when it's removed.  So you'd have this kind of mutable material, which you already have, it's true, but it's sort of weird to combine all the steps at once.  Of course, the proper way to handle it would be to specify what happens to the log items and permanently alter them, but that could be a pain to play.

simple, just have floors use one material like now and walls/stairs use 2, as if material demands for aboveground buildings wasn't high enough.
Maybe that wasn't shush a good idea at all.
