Teemu: Coffeebreak(esque) Roguelike
« on: May 21, 2010, 01:30:23 am »

I came across this charming roguelike the other day. It's challenging enough and can be played in relatively short timespans.

You start out on a small, semi-randomly generated island (I say semi because the locations are always the same, but the layout differs between games), rendered with charming graphics, in terms of ASCII. The goal is simple; you want off the island, though almost everything wants to kill you. Worth at least one full play through :)

From the website:
Quote
It's one of those days you wake up on a beach of small island without clothes. It's calm and dry, but there is a sense of danger. And a figure of a pirate ship in the mist. It's time to get some chicken and chew bubblegum. But you are all out of gum.

- an epic adventure of tiny proportions
- run for your life as you encounter dangerous beasts
- drink alcohol to regain your health
- collect exciting items like patches of grass
- solve mysterious puzzles as you try to escape the island

If you have a small amount of time up your sleeves, give this one a shot :)

Saw this already, thinking about trying it.

Soo.. tips? Tricks? I am not too clever when it comes to roguelikes. I figured out how to wield a bone (or a bottle of rum) and smack things, but I die eventually. Not sure where to go from there.

I thought this was an interesting take on the idea of a roguelike - there's combat, but it's more focused on puzzles which usually let you avoid fighting.  I managed to finish it, but I had a bunch of items I never found a use for, so I suspect there's an alternate ending, although maybe that hasn't been implemented yet.

Tips:
Wielding a bone is better than attacking barehanded.
You can kick palm trees to get coconuts.  Throwing coconuts at things is usually much better than attacking them in melee.  Throwing skulls and bones works well too.
Your HP doesn't regenerate unless you're at least slightly drunk.  You only start with one bottle of rum, but you can find more.

Spoilers/Walkthrough  (It's way more fun to figure it out yourself though):

So, has anyone found a use for rupees or the piece of wire?

This really annoyed me. I can just imagine the maker of it going, "HURR YOU KNOW WHAT'D BE FUNNY? MAKING THE MAJORITY OF DEATHS FROM PEOPLE BEING BITCHSLAPPED BY MONKEYS ROFL LOL"

Really pissed me off.

Yes, you can die early on if you're unlucky, but otherwise just kick one of the palm trees next to where you start a few times and grab the coconuts.  Monkeys will die from 1 or 2 thrown coconuts.

It's best to avoid melee combat wherever you can in this one.

Thanks for the help Silverside.

I found an amusing (well not really) bug. If you trigger the arrow trap in the ogre cave and THEN put the golden statue on the pedestal, it seems to crash the game.

Yes, I tried that the first time around too.  I thought I was just too late and the game closing meant the trap had killed me, but I think you're right that it's a bug.

I just kick things... Things don't like being kicked...

I one-kick most of the monsters.

My character was named Chuck Norris.

Why am I posting like this?
