Battle Simulator???
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:19:11 am »

Wasn't totally sure where to post this as I'm not looking for a "game" per se.

I am in need of a customizable battle simulator, does not need to be specific to any era, in fact it would be better if it were not, as weapons, armor, troops and the like will all be generic.

Features I need...

- Print outs, reports, data sheets (Or at least the ability to save as printable document of any format.)
- 1 vs 1, or 100k+ vs 100k+, or any combination there of.
- Troop Naming (Sort of contradicts the whole generic thing I mentioned, but is needed.)
- Customizable Special Skills (As in bonuses/penalties for movement, attacking and so forth.)
- As realistic as possible (I don't want any super simple simulator, I can do super simple myself with a calculator)
- Single Battles and or long Campaigns (Simple meet and fight to planned tactical multi-wave battles.)
- Sieges (Would love the ability to simulate sieges on city/castle type facilities.)
- Water (Water vessels vs Water vessels, anything vs Water vessels)

I'm sure there are other features I'm going to want/need, but this list should suffice to get some input from you all.

Does not have to be a game, can be just be software that simulates the battles, or even a website.

Thanks all,

That is a mighty tall order. Closest thing I've ever seen is MegaMek with a mechbuilder.

It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I'm oddly reminded of Deadliest Warrior by this request.

I would be tempted to try Chuck Norris vs 65535 of everything else.

Pretty sure nothing with that scope exists.

They had to get one of these custom made, and it still wasn't very good. So it's a safe bet to say there isn't anything you can easily get for your project. BTW, modern warfare is quite different from what can be seen in medieval or Napoleonic times, which one were you going for?

You might want to make that yourself. I have nigh heard of a game that simulates that much.

On a FPS battle simulator note, that's somewhat less complex, you might want to check out ArmA II. It's extremely moddable and has huge battles of combined arms.

Supreme Commander has Single Battles, and Water vessels, as well as 10k vs 10k, but not too much complexity.

What you have there, is an idea for a game no one has designed yet. I suggest you start programming (or learn C++ and begin programming).

what, like the old "wargame construction kit" or the more recent "the war engine"?

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/356/details/The.War.Engine

but with some sort of it-plays-itself feature?  I dont know if the above games do that.  I havent played with WCS since the 80s, though i vaguely remember assigning both sides to the AI and watching battles. and I never actually got a copy of TWE when it was released.

Thanks for replies all...

The era really doesn't matter, as long as there is a baseline used across the board, it should all work out fine; a 10 in attack skill is a 10 in attack skill no matter how you look at it.  But in case it helps spark ideas/suggestions, it would be a Medieval setting.

I also considered The War Engine and might have to go that route, will need to mess with it though to find out.

Although this is space oriented and pretty basic, this is sort of what I was thinking.
