Don't get me wrong, I'm all for jumping into programming by starting a big project like that, but it's not going to be simple or easy....  You are going to have to learn a programming language of some sort, and even when you do, Rogue-likes can require some fairly tricky stuff (path-finding, dungeon generation, etc).

Not trying to discourage you, but make sure you set realistic expectations, it makes blowing them out of the water a lot more fun later, rather than falling short....

On the Wall is a Masterfully engraved carving of Urist McHardcastle and Goblins. Urist McHardcastle is surrounded by the Goblins. The Golbins are stamping on Urist McHardcastle. Urist McHardcaste is laughing at the Goblins. The carving related to the prolonged and bloody death of Urist McHardcastle in the Fall of 1659, the Winter of 1659, and the Spring of 1660. On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

Yes, don't try to make DF.

You're best off trying to make the absolute simplest, most minimal Roguelike possible. Focus on one specific thing. Then you can build off of that.

Eventually you'll learn enough to realize some fundamental mistakes you made early on. At that point you might want to start a new project to build everything right from the ground up. But that's necessary!

Good luck gentlemen!
