Oh, how I love Dwarfs
« on: May 18, 2010, 11:29:30 pm »

I just had to say something after seeing how silly dwarfs act when they dig!

I was channeling a hole down to my main meeting hall so my dwarfs don't get to much cave adaptation and as I was removing the ramps to keep the gobbys out I find a silly dwarf has fallen asleep on a very dangerous ledge. O.O Take a look! Oh, and its my first post! Loving this so much!

Meh.

I've given up and accepted that any dwarf who falls asleep in an irrigation canal, magma channel, or ledge slated for demolition, is exercising his or her own responsibility to the laws of natural selection.

Good to see another dorf lover on the forums.
As far as I can see from the pics that dorf will be fine, as long as you're willing to leave him a way out. :P
If you don't want your miners to fall asleep in the places where it's very Fun to sleep, you should build some beds. That way they will run along to bed rather then fall on their beards and snooze.

And just another note, so far cave adaptation can be averted with light, doesn't have to be outside. And since that built floors allow light though you can do the thing you were doing, but just cover the hole with constructed floors.

Good luck and have Fun. :D

He could do that. Or he could build a massive skylight crossed by iron beams with clear glass block floors and be super awesome like that. Be advised that if any of your dwarves do get cave adaptation, they'll puke all over the meeting hall and the crowds will track it around.

Well, for the moment I just placed an unclimbable wall around the top of the skylight but plan to construct a glass ceiling like you mentioned, if i ever figure out where i get sand :S

But on a confused note, I'm attaching another image of some channels my miners were digging for my defenses.

The think I'm confused about is why both sides collapsed (where the arrows point) in the same area even though there was stone supporting it everywhere below the red line. Im just wondering why this collapse happened? Is it a bug or something entirely meant to happen, Ive never seen this before in all my channeling.

Oh and I'd like to pay respects to Kosoth Iklistudil and Zan Sibrekilral, Legendary Miners. :(
First to die in the many halls of Stettadetur.

I had dug a magma channel once, which dwarfs were using as a short cut to essentially get to the other side, and then the last tile was dug and the magma started to pour in just as some poor sap stepped in side.  Watching this, I saw him get the red question mark over his head and immediately started running in the other direction.  it was kinda funny.  Gee it seemed like such a good route before!
