Not only that, but they gain stats (Although in Majesty {I have the game open now} they actually level up), and the game itself features dwarves as obtainable units :P

Oh yeah, forgot about the stats and levels, been forever since I played. And there's a sorta single player version out there called Heroes of Ardania. Browser based, but you are one of the heroes you normally can't control, kinda like adventure mode.

Scratch that, throwing-axe-wielding cats in the dark.
They're cute but my god that's terrifying.

I'm kind of surprised that nobody has said Sim Ant yet (if you haven't played it, you must). Nothing like a spider megabeast to ruin your day. Only in that game you could actually lead your own sieges. Death to all red ants and goblins!

I think the Elder Scrolls dwarves were still shorter than normal elves, otherwise why would they be 'dwarves'? Even they are a bit steampunk-y, with their mechanical towers and constructs, but their extinction/disappearance is a nice twist on the fantasy standard - one of my favourite parts of Elder Scrolls lore.

I know the conversation has moved on, but they were named "dwarves" by the giants, who were fond of them. They were the same height as other elves. it's mentioned in some book in Morrowind.

It's a macro-managing version of The Sims.

Look it up, lazy.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

There are a lot of games that possess DF-like gameplay. But the depth of history, personalities, and quirky events that Dwarf Fortress spawns is, in my opinion, rivaled only by Paradox Entertainment's "Crusader Kings," which let you take control of, not a European kingdom, but a European dynasty--i.e., you might not remain the King of France or the Duke of Orleans, but you will always be the Capet family. The world of CK creates--both by random generation and as a result of the player's choices over the course of 400 years of gameplay--in depth characters with extended families and courts, heirs, bastards, and ex-wives assassinated for their lack of fertility (and/or for t3h lulz), where each character is individualized by enemies, friends, old wounds, strengths, weaknesses, jealous ambitions, rival claims to titles and land, etc. The gameplay is radically different, but in terms of the level of attachment and enjoyment gained through sheer volume of details--as well as the presence of "fun" generated by constant random historical/personal/political events, with the possibilities multiplied by the player's reactions--there's no game experience more similar to DF... in my humble opinion.
