Travian Main Website
I decided it would be nice to gather up some bay12'ers for a little game. Travian is a online strategy in which you build a town, and eventually a empire, from the ground up. It features three different civilizations to play from; the defensive Gauls, offensive Teutons, and the elitist Romans. It also features a pretty good alliance system.

Anyway, I was thinking we could all start on a new server and try to get an alliance up and running. If enough of you are interested, that is. If you are, I highly recommend you DO NOT register on the website I linked above. There are many different travian websites for different countries, and that is just the main and biggest one. Lots of activity, but that also means you'll be facing the top players from around the world. Instead, we will be going to a smaller server, perhaps .co.uk (United Kingdom), .us (United States), or even .com.au (Australia)

Anyway, it can be really fun, yet really frustrating. We have a choice between the 3x speed servers, or the normal servers. Of course, the 3x servers go 3x faster. Hectic, yet usually a bit more fun.

Personally, this would be my sixth travian round (They each last a year, on normal servers), and I would be honored to help anyone that wants to learn the ropes. I have helped lead a alliance in the rank 8 place (Out of several thousand), as well as maintained a website for them. (For anyone wondering, the alliance was called DTD, and, just like you guys, was a bunch of forumites that decided to play. Forum was for Desktop Tower Defense, I'm sure a couple of you are familiar with the flash game).

So... anyone interested? Or want more info? Just remember, we will be blessed by Armok.

Eh, my current browser strategy game is ikariam, though I think I travian was the first one I tried out, I can remember barely anything about it, what makes it stand above all the other browser games out there?

It all really depends on your personal tastes. I find travian to have that nice balance of "fun" and "simple". And it has a damn good playerbase.

I played travian for about 2 rounds a few years ago. I promised myself never to go back, but I could make an exception for a B12 alliance.

Do you get to keep anything when the round gets reset?

A round reset is similar to a meteor hitting the earth: Everything's gone. The towns, the landscape, etc. Its similar to "Generate New World Now!". You get to keep your fame, though, since the community almost worships good players.

These city building browser games are fun for a bit but after about a week or so it just ends up more of the same and gets boring, to me.

I've felt that about other browser games, but not travian. You simply cant get to most of the game in a week, it takes months to get all the features in the game available to you; for example, taking over towns or catapulting them. You do kind of get attached to your little town, at least in my experience. My heart sunk every time I saw an incoming attack.

Ugh, Travian.
Accidentally selected Teutons, building up troop defense when I shouldn't have been, losing untold amounts to raids...
But in the end I quit because the ever-present threat of having a raid I couldn't spend down against began to cut into my grades, and thus I quit sometime in January or February.
In general I prefer games which aren't constantly running - that way I'll actually be at the helm when things start to break down.
