Typing in the search shouldn't need spaces. This would fix the problem. "Ironlowboot" is typable and readable.

Space really needs to be the key for the most common function.

May I say that the 'esc' key also stops you from having control in remote assistance, which is how I play multiplayer games with my friends, because of this I would like the spacebar back.

Given everything that's been said in this thread, I think the best solution would be to reinstate F9 as the leave-text-entry-screen button, and make the squad menu autopause the game.

I think that would be an ideal use for an init option. I can definitely see where you're coming from on that, but I'm sure there are also people you wouldn't dream of using the menus while their dwarves were running about unattended, so it makes sense to have the option.
