You should be able to designate what a dwarf is. Such as I want Bob to be a carpenter. His name should turn yellow right then and not after he gains skill.

Yea, it would make things easier to sort out when you've got a lot of people. Like the rainbow coloured haulers.

But then what logic does the game use to determine what the dwarf in question is? Say I have both wood burning and furnace operating on (my standard "Smelter" configuration). Is he/she a smith or a farmer?

Perhaps you mean a direct player control over the color of the dwarf's name. That could be useful. I for one would do away with the standard scheme, replacing it with my own set of common professions.

Yeah Puzzlemaker, it really doesn't.

Anyways, I do not like this idea because I don't like keeping track of individual dwarves and their skills when I have hundreds of them.   I use their color to determine what skills they do have; rather than what I'd like them to have.  It's a useful indicator of that, and I'd rather not see it diminished.

I don't want the current system taken out. It would just be nice if I could change it at will also.
