all of the new stuff was broken so the only new thing you could do is mine extra deep and die

Sounds like it's working as intended.
What a cruel way to force us to test that specific new feature...

If a elf dies in a forest and only dwarfs are around to see it does anyone care?

why that SDL (40d) stuff is so important?
what is it?

SDL = Simple DirectMedia Layer. It's a cross-platform library for low-level I/O.

If you're not a programmer, all you need to know is that it means new versions of Dwarf Fortress will work on Windows, Mac and Linux without much effort and that the graphics code will be faster so you should get a better frame rate.

There's an un-cruel way to have your dwarf slaughtered by a horde of demons?
Well, I guess you can always setup your entire fort with collapsing ceilings that knocks out your dwarves, so the die while unconscious, much less "cruel".

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.
