Option for straight shaft digging

It would be nice if you could instruct a dwarf to dig a shaft straight down. Even if it just was the willingless to dig a channel under your feet, it would allow long shafts letting in sunlight as in the Chamber of Marzabul.

Lighting is not an issue so far. You could always try digging a staircase, then smashing it with a cavein...

I thought dwarves were prohibited from digging the floor from under themselves because it used to make it impossible to clear out large areas, like moats.

I think you could make linked stairways all the way up, and then order them to be removed. I think the dwarves would know to start from the top, working until you've got a clean vertical tunnel.

No. I always make pits by digging squares of stairways and then designating them for channeling but dwarves always work from top to bottom.

Will that work? Will they remove the stairs correctly, or leave a bunch of unattached "down staircases"?

Will it make a single 1 tile hole 10 Z-levels deep?

provided its ok for them to end at the bottom, it works. you can make pits of any size with it without worrying about small parts of land becoming unreachable if you have more then one miner. and it doesnt matter if its 1 tile or 5x5 or 10x10 or whatever. designating down stairs and up/down stairs for channeling will remove them. you have to designate this one z level at a time though to prevent parts from becoming unreachable. the final upstairs you will have left should be removed normally with remove up stairs/ramp, otherwise your pit will become one level lower.   :D
