Trade Depot Usable without Traders Present
« on: February 02, 2008, 02:11:00 am »

It'd be quite handy if a trade depot could be used even when there are no traders present. It would be a nice and effective way of moving large numbers of goods from one end of the map to the other without dealing with massive stockpile juggling or dumping designations. In effect, it would be like a supply depot instead of a trade depot but it would be an excellent tool what with its new interface and all  :D

Heres a cute trick: If you have a depot thats protected from thieves, you can forbid surplus export products and they will be left at the depot so you dont need to haul them in at the next caravan...

Having the depot always available would be even more excessive than the current garbage dump exploit, which I guess is why its disabled...

Fine then, I'll just have to find a way to use dwarf companion to break the trader's legs next time so they can't leave...

i make a partial living by locking in the elven caravan each time.  I have a drawbridge to an artificial island with the depot and another one from the depot to my fort. both raised, the caravan goes nowhere. They go melancholy, kill each other and their animals, my military take care of the last survivor. The Elves don't seem to be bothered since they send a new caravan each year, and i build the clothiers workshop near the depot so i need no cloth stockpile, the tons of cloth the elves bring all remain on the depot. I sell the surplus to the next caravan without having to move them. This works too :P

And a big thank you to the elves, that keep providing me with free rope reed stuff each year. yay!

Does food and the like decay when in the trade depot? Otherwise you've got an infinitely large stockpile.

Food definitely decays in the trade deopt - it's often a fight to get the dwarves to haul it to the food stockpile each year instead of letting it rot while they haul the items THEY think might be perishable (such as rocks)

Will it still rot fast if it's considered "indoors?"
