Accidental Accuracy
« on: May 09, 2010, 03:18:51 pm »

This refers to historical accuracy, and the accident was on my part.

Awhile ago, somebody was talking about undergoing a city sized mega project, and the idea of making a city like Venice came up.  I decided that I really liked that idea, so I started working on an aboveground city with canals and roads and stone buildings.  I should probably add wood to the buildings too, and there's a problem with me building roads between the canals and most buildings but that's not the point.  What's important is defense.  I decided that with such a large city, the issue of enemies would be rather major.  Ideally I would eventually have a few groups of melee infantry.  Everybody else would be crossbowmen who had active duty a couple months a year or so.  Split into groups of 10, the maximum size.  Today, I was looking up Venician history on Wikipedia.  "By 1303, crossbow practice had become compulsory in the city, with citizens training in groups."  They were also apparently organized into units of 12, which is slightly higher than what I can do, but still close.  There is no way I can turn away from that idea now, despite how hard it is to get dwarves to train with crossbows right now.

There's a lot more I could do to make it accurate, but I'm not about to dig under every house to build wood logs and then flood that layer.

Heh, and here I thought you were gonna talk about when you aim at one goblin and accidently hit another.  That's pretty awesome, though I wonder why venice and not other large cities did this?

I've got a feeling that compulsory longbow/crossbow training was compulsory in several areas.

The only example I can think of right now is Ankh-Morpork, though, so I may be wrong about that.

In England, it was (And still is(!)) required for all men of age to practice with the longbow every Sunday.

In London, possibly all of England, it was required for all men to be able to swim in case they were needed to work in the Navy. Not the same, but similar.

It isn't hard to get dwarves to train with crossbow. It is only hard if you want them to shoot with it. 10 dwarves could grind goblins into bone meal... within a few months.

I like your idea. I hope you'll update to show your progress.

So, were they beating each other with crossbows in groups back then too?

Nah, they cut off the fingers, then used the string of the crossbow to lodge bolts in the stumps (not sure how they did that with no fingers, but still.)

So yeah. Wolverine. But Italian. And 100s of him.

Well I had to abandon because before I even really got started, since my mayor got possessed and apparently didn't want ANY of the workshops I built.  So now I'm back to 7 guys, but they've got like 10 houses or so houses built now.  And I started on the wall too.  I just couldn't use my idea of dwarves having houses with workshops on the first floor.  Screw the inefficiency.  I also figured that most cities required mandatory military training, but apparently mercenaries were really popular and Venice didn't use them as much as other city-states at the time or something.  The fact that crossbows were Venice's weapon of choice made me happy.

I'll need a few more people before I implement the mandatory training.  But now things can really get started at least.

Also, there is sooo much stone used in this project.

Collapse the whole thing when you're done for more (future) accuracy!
