1.Find a GCS
2.Cage said GCS
3.Release caged GCS into air locked room.
4.Release some useless creatures into the air lock.
5.GCS will then remember how to "shot web" and will shoot a web at the offending/useless creature.
6.???
7.PROFIT!

FAQ:
Q:Why won't my GCS make webs?
A:It might have asked "How do I shot web?" In that case, just send a useless animal or goblin into the pit.
Q:What's the ??? for?
A:That's for you to decide.

Thank you for your time.
SIDE NOTE:
Avoid flying octopus people with laser capabilities.

Pfft, I suppose you leave it to us to figure out how to cage and recage the GCS.  Some guide.  :)

Certainly worth the effort to upgrade from pig tail fabric, though.

I remember reading a variant on this where you train the GCS first, via dungeon mastery, then use a less dangerous hostile creature as the target.  Easier to work, assuming the GCS hasn't savaged any of your dudes yet.

Does a GCS shoot on line-of-sight or does it need to be able to reach the creature it is webbing?

If you split a room into 3 'sections' with channels between them, put the GCS in one end section and the bait in the opposite end section... would you have a farmable 'field' of webs in the middle section?

Something like this:
Code: [Select]
#X###X###X#
#+.+++++.+#
#S.+++++.b#
#+.+++++.+#
###########

# = wall
+ = floor
. = channel
X = door
S = GCS
b = bait creature

You might need some way to hide the bait creature, and the GCS if it's not tamed, so your web collectors don't get scared and your GCS stops shooting when you want it to.

Of course the problem is then finding and caging the GCS...

Code: [Select]
####X####
#.......#
###.....#
#bL...SV#
###.....#
#.......#
#########

V = Restraint
b = Bait/Restraint
L = Floodgate

Restrain the bait and the (trained) GCS, have a lever somewhere else to open/close the floodgate, and you've got your harvest.

Code: [Select]
###########
.X^Xp....S#
###########

p = Bottom of pit
^ = Cage Trap
X = Floodgate

1. Toss a cat into the pit from above
2. Wait.
3. Open the floodgates, making sure your dwarves are far away behind a door or something.
4. Wait.
5. Collect the webs.
6. Put spider back in the pit.
7. Go to step 1.
