Returning to the elk-bird (just to be vaguely on topic):

It has two legs, but no arms (or wings)
It is feathered
The feet have talons, so presumably bird legs
It has a beak and horns, and is described as "has the head of a bird with the horns of a great elk"
It grows to nearly half again larger than a human (100000 vs 70000)- I assume this is mass, so it isn't necessarily *taller*

I would guess the neck would be short (so not ostrich-like), in order to support the horns, but can't see anything in the raws about it...

Hmm. So they are bipedal, have no arms, have large horns, and presumably bend over to graze. I'm guessing their natural state is "fallen over and cant get up"

Actually, that's the natural state of their enemies. :P

With that description, I assume that elk birds feed on the large fungi of the underworld rather than the shrubs, though, hacking out pieces with their beaks. The size of the horns dragging them down... I guess that depends whether the elk part is wapiti, moose, or Megaloceros.

I suppose something like this, then.

That's pretty close I think. It also doesn't have a tail, though.

Yeah, tall fungi probably help. Would they be able to get enough water from that though? I suppose the underground water is mostly ramped, so they could just wade in until they are deep enough to drink easily...

The lack of wings makes me think that Elkbirds might be overgrown, horned kiwi birds:

(Real-world kiwi birds do in fact have vestigial wing nubs, but they're so small that they can't be seen under their feathers.)

And now I'm trying to picture a horned kiwi.  :-\
Thank you, Arkose, for ruining what remains of my day.

On a random note, that Kiwi appears to have whiskers. ???

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Don't most kiwis appear to have whiskers? Comes from being night foragers, I believe.

Its the whiskers on the parrots down there that I find really weird. :/

And yes, from the description I also though giant horned kiwi.
