[40d] Can't Smelt Limestone?

Hey, in my current fortress in DF 40d, it would seem that I'm unable to smelt limestone at the smelter. The only option I have at the smelter is to "melt a metal object." However, I have plenty of non-forbidden limestones in my stockpile. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? (pretty sure limestone is flux...)

DF version is 40d16.

You can't "smelt" limestone as far as I know, you can smelt pig iron bars (and other things that need flux) WITH it
You also need fuel.

Or are you thinking of LIMONITE?

Which CAN be smelted into Iron. I made that confusion once too.

Are you having trouble making pig iron?  I was mysteriously unable to make it at my latest fort at the smelter, but I could get it to work from the manager menu. (Much like the soap bug)

Limestone being flux means that it's used in the production of pig iron and steel, not that it is in itself an ore of something.
