To clarify... you need a wood furnace to convert at least one unit of wood into charcoal. That charcoal is a unit of fuel which can be used in your smelter to convert coal into coke. You use one unit of fuel and one unit of coal to get two (or three depending on if you're using lignite or bituminous I believe) units of coke. (also fuel which can be used to continue to process if you want. Using a magma smelter eliminates the step of needing the starting fuel so you can just process it directly if you have magma. Note that even with a magma smelter you still need 1 unit of fuel to make steel. (Along with flux stone of course)
