Space instead of ESC?
« on: May 01, 2010, 08:12:23 am »

I ran a search already, so sorry if this has been asked.
I checked all of the keybindings and through init and I couldn't find a way to back out of things with Space instead of with ESC. Is there a way? Did I miss something or what?
Also, is there a way to order all dwarfs inside anymore? I couldn't find that either.

I've heard people have rebound exit to space, though never did so myself so can't help there.
There's no more 'dwarfs stay inside' order, but you can define burrows where you want to restrict them to, and use an alert to assign all civilians to that burrow in the event of a siege. Or, if you never want them leaving that burrow, ever, you could just assign them all to it manually.

To rebind, press ESC to access the options menu, go down to Key Bindings, and then go down to the Leave screen binding (6th down from the top).  Press "k" on it, press spacebar to reassign, and then press s to save your rebinding so you do not need to rebind every time you open DF.

I JUST came back to post how blind I was, haha. Thanks a lot.

Bear in mind that you now will be unable to filter by multiple words in the manager, as you will back out of the job selection screen if you try to put in a space.
This also applies to any other string entry screen where space can be used.
Part of the reason it was changed to begin with.

There's an easy work-around to using spaces in the job manager/search queries, go to String: Character 032 in the keybindings and change it from space to shift+space.

Space user forever.

Space user forever.

One thing I like about the new Esc system is the fact I don't accidentally un-pause the game as I move through the menu.

That's not the reason, he could have just left F9 as the "leave text-entry screen" button.

I think the reason was because he wanted the ability to pause/unpause in the new squad menu. Which is kind of silly, I don't really want to be using that menu while I'm unpaused anyway.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I just use DELETE on my keyboard.  At least one hand is in that area anyway.  Space still pauses though.  I could never get used to esc.

I find myself having to rebind to space every time I start up the game. Is there something I can edit to get it to start up that way?

You have to push a button to actually save that configuration (write it to the actual file?).  Its probly S or F6.

You can change the bindings permanently with the 'interface' file in the init folder. Change [LEAVESCREEN:] and [LEAVESCREEN_ALL:] to space and shift+space.

So you can use spaces when searching or using the job manager find [STRING_A032:] and change it to shift+space.

Edit.. Nevermind, I figured out what I was doing wrong.
