Praise the plummeting feline! You have found adamantine!
« on: May 11, 2010, 10:55:43 am »

For the first time ever, I came across the valuable substance.  I was even surprised to see there was a rough floor of it to make a nice ledge to stand on.

I may need to make a better path to reach it... I have to go down lots, to the left lots, down lots more, then all the way back to the right.  My haulers will have a fun time in the caverns...

At the same time, I also found the magma sea.  Previous to this, I only encountered magma in a previous version, and even then I used dwarf foreman to find an embark square with it.

Sadly I threw my only strand extractor (who came in like in the first or second migrant wave) into the military.  For the strand extraction, anyone can do it, it is just a speed issue, right?

Then I should perhaps set specific stockpiles limited only to adamantine?

Shaping it into armor/weapons is the regular smith skill, right?  At this point I have had limited access to steel and my smiths are really not very good, so it sounds like it's time to make a thousand shields and bolts to get the skills up...

And I am familiar with the idea of the Balrog in LoTR, so I will (try) not dig too deeply!!  There's like 25 zlevels of it, and another column besides... so maybe after I get some will be a good time to turn on sieges again so I can have some Fun!

Felines do make great autonomous dwarven rovers. Breach a cavern from the top, chuck a pile of kittens into the cavern, and they will map the caverns for you. They're also a great early warning system that will let you know what kind of FUN to expect from that cavern.

I would suggest to put "Spoilers!" in the thread title ;).

I thought about SPOILER, but the crafstdwarfshop even lists adamantine as a usable substance, so I didn't see the harm.  You'd have to not play to realize there was an item you didn't have, that wasn't easily available.  And anyone with (or without) a clue that got a migrant Strand Extractor would look up what purpose that actually had...

And the only Fun I mentioned were sieges!  Imagine taking on the sieging goblins with adamatine axes.  Or taking on hoary marmots.

Doesn't adamantine make a fairly poor weapon material for the current version, though? I thought it's lightweight nature actually makes it less effective than steel or iron due to the way combat is calculated at present.

Right now, I'm sticking with good ol' fashioned steel. Its reliable, effective, and I don't risk bringing the Circus to town digging it out.

Adamantine is amazing for armor, shields, and piercing/slashing weapons.

It is very bad for blunt weapons, like hammers and maces. For blunt weapons you want a heavy metal. Lead or platinum would be ideal due to their weight.

Or try FUBAR! The best chocolate bar ever!
And you can't eat them, either, sadly. Even though it'd make sieges so much more fun; dwarves lining the walls, drooling and carrying sharp knives and forks, ready for the upcoming meals.

Cue Guitar Hero reference. Or something funny/witty like that.

Razor wire.
Even a piece of adamantine string would probably be deadly if you wound it tight between a couple of trees. It already comes in 'strands', though I'm not sure how thin those are.

Man, it'd be great to have a heavily wooded fortress defended by dwarven guerillas, faces darkened with ash and dwarven syrup, large steel daggers tucked down their boots, picking off kobolds from little hides and building snares and razor wire traps.

It'd probably be impossible to wind adamantine string around a tree. The tree would be sliced in half from the tension.

Or maybe I'm just exaggerating how sharp the blue stuff is.

Heavy Metal?

If a dwarf creatures a spherical Perfect Emerald artifact and names it "The Loc-Nar", then I suggest ceasing heavy metal production.

Why? Besides a possible surge of goblin sieges and ambushes.
