Personally I make copies of the DF folder for each mod, so I'd have my folders like this:

Dwarf Fortress
Dwarf Fortress - Xenomorph Mod
Dwarf Fortress - Genesis Mod

and so on.

As Dr. Melon said, just in case, have a copy of vanilla dwarf fortress, with no mods or the mods you always use no matter what. This will be like a save state just in case you mess something up.

Which mod in particular, there a lot of different mods. Some have their own executable which are fairly easy. Some just require to copy and paste information, some require just downloading a file and putting it in the raw.

I mod games and educate others how to do so as well, if you'd like to learn join my Discord and you can join a bunch of like minded individuals. (Presently modding Space Engineers and No Man's Sky.)

Looking into modding DF? This forum guide & wiki guide may still be a good start!
