Bringing the nature of 2D features back was an explicit goal of the new underground if I recall!

Once changes to sieges and food/farming/booze come in, things should be looking pretty good (if you enjoy dire situations). Things do actually get extremely deadly right now but it seems more random and crazy than intended and I assume it'll get scaled back a bit when combat and the other things are working properly.

Except for the fact that it's, you know, NOT.
Toady assigns the version numbers.
Not us.
The newest version is 0.31.03.

let him call it what he wants, it gives the rest of us an easy and immediate visual cue on who to ignore.  add it to the list with "circus".

So when is Boatmurdered and Copperblazes going to be remade in 0.31.03? :D (reread Boatmurdered the other night, and kept waking the dead I was laughing so hard. One day, I'm going to buy a printer and some cartridges, just to print out the best DF stories like BM, CB, etc... I know of three completed, and one still ongoing that'll get their own bindings. )
lets print the first DF story book in history of dwarvenkind 8)
Basically. Except it'd be for private use, and not sale. Maybe I'd make two, and donate a copy to the library where my mom works... :P

Can you imagine going to the library and seeing a book on the shelf entitled: "Welcome to Boatmurdered"?

Dwarven storybooks are carved into the walls.

That would be as deadly to the wielder as to anyone else!  You'd sever your own arm at the first swing!  It's perfect!

WELCOME TO F*CKING BOATMURDERED!

We need this on a t-shirt.  We really do.  Menacing with spikes of cat leather and hanging rings of green glass.

Yes.

Or just a T-shirt. Perhaps a picture of vomit and miasma and dorfs adorning the back.

I am in the exact opposite situation of many of those commenting - I played the hell out of the 2D version, but I haven't played the new version.  Don't get me wrong, I've played the 3D versions, just not DF2010.  It does my heart good to know that the old constants have essentially returned.

And Boatmurdered is the best story ever.  One of my favorite things about DF is that it's more than just a game - it's a story engine.  Look at worldgen logs - if you were so inclined, you could take snippets of it, flesh it out a bit, and wind up with great fiction.

Also, I would proudly wear this shirt -uncensored- everywhere I went:

FRONT: WELCOME TO F*CKING BOATMURDERED!

                     Hope you like Miasma

BACK: This shirt menaces with spikes of cotton.  It contains an image of Dwarf Fortress in <font color> thread.

Of course, my dream DF shirt is a simple polo with an embroidered dwarf where the polo player/tiny alligator would normally be.

My car's license plate holder says "The Enemy's Gate is Down".

But yeah...It's quite awesome!  I'm liking the return to 2D-ish days it a whole bunch.  What would make it better for me would be:

1) Lower caverns have harder critters (which they might already)
2) Critters can batter down your constructed walls, given enough time; they just prefer not to if there's a faster way to get to you.
3) A little more warning before the bad things come out.

Personally, I always end up with problems where I break into the first cavern and then immediately have to wall it off completely, because otherwise, giant bats start screaming through the air and removing peoples' heads in one shot.  Telling civvies to retreat to burrows doesn't help, because the batties and cave trolls are just wild animals; by the time you notice they're there, your people are dying horribly.
