Pausing and speed
« on: December 06, 2006, 04:21:00 pm »

Would it be possible to add in a speed control for Fortress Mode?  There are often huge swaths of time where I don't really need to do anything, and I'd just like to let the dwarfs get on with things.  Simcity, for example, was improved greatly by the ability to speed up and slow down time depending on the situation.

Alternatively, or preferably additionally, a lot of time is wasted in PAUSE doing things such as designating mining (esspecially mining).  Could this be set to not pause the game by default?  You can still pause things normally, after all.  It would make time go by faster when it needs to go by faster.

Agreed, it'd be nice if the designation and building modes didn't automatically pause the game.  But maybe there's some programming complication involved with setting it in realtime.

Yeah, I originally had it happen in real-time, but there are lots of hassles, since the interface has to constantly react to the changes in the game.  I doubt a speed control is really feasible over the long term, depending on what you mean.  It would work in the beginning at least, and on machines that are super powerful.

so i take it that fast-forward is out of the question...  it would be most useful at the begining of the game when all 7-8 dwarves suddenly fall asleep all at once and you're left twiddling your thumbs waiting for them to get up and play again.
