Gem Cutter heaven
« on: April 25, 2010, 05:48:12 am »

My fortress, which consisted of forty, but now consists of thirty-nine dwarfs, as one of my dwarfs died fighting a forgotten beast, has three gem cutter inhabitants.

That's not a bad thing, as they're not completely unneeded.

But when they all three get a strange mood in a row, I can't say I manage to keep my eyebrows on one line.

Is it coincidence? Is it a message? What is going on in my fortress and why? I'm not sure I need three legendary gem cutters.

That will surely make glass industry *MUCH* more profitable if you have access to sand:)
(Yes, Items encrusted with masterwork large green glass)

Pity I do not actually have any glass.

My fortress is based on the caverns deep underneath a glacier, which I still plan to melt some day.

Besides, they're great at cutting, not encrusting.
The only thing higher gem cutter skill does is making them able to sometimes craft rough gems into a gem craft, and to generally work faster.

Well there not likely to become any good at encrusting until you start making some bling on some meat!

I'm too greedy to do that.

I am a dwarf, after all. I shall produce exceptional and masterful encrustings only. Which practically means I'm waiting for a migrant gem setter to show up, stockpiling masses of gems ahead of that moment.

Edit: So much for the setter I hoped for: I got another gem cutter instead.

PRAISE THE GEM CUTTERS!
That should increase production by 33%!

I didn't even know encrusting had a quality modifier, but you can always have your dwarves train up by encrusting your lower-quality goods with the less valuable gems. And you can import sand.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Or the raw glass, for that matter.

I was talking about importing alimunim.

Can you encrust blocks with gems? That would make a really ostentatious fort. I'm guessing not, since they'd become a construction, and not an object.

Hey, I'm cool with you tying a dog up and shooting it with a ballista if you're short on elves, but there's not need to lie about it to us.

You could make a cathedral!  Masterwork large gem windows everywhere.  It'd be nice!

EDIT:  And you could always reclaim the gems later, if you do get a skilled gem setter...

Aye, make Gem windows while you wait for a setter.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

Use green, yellow, and red gems to make Gem Windows and put them at every intersection of your fort. If a dwarf gets tossed into jail or a beating, you can pretend it's because of traffic violations rather than because some idiot didn't get his elk bone idol on time.
